How West African Nations are applying a maritime sovereignty trend
In a bold shift that signals a new phase of assertiveness in West Africa’s maritime domain, regional governments are moving to reclaim control of their sea trade through the revival or creation of state-backed shipping companies.
In a policy announcement, Guinea’s Minister of Mines and Geology, Bouna Sylla, declared that 50% of all bauxite exports must be transported on ships flying the Guinean flag.
The initiative coincides with the launch of a state-owned shipping company, Guinéenne des Transports Maritimes (GUITRAM), which is tasked with executing the country’s maritime logistics strategy and directly operating bauxite shipping routes.
