Eimskip container ship adrift after failure in main engine

A Faroe Islands-flagged container ship managed by Eimskip experienced a failure in the main engine on Wednesday.

The Reykjavík-headquartered company said a failure occurred in the main engine of Eimskip’s vessel Dettifoss on July 9.

The vessel, built in 2020, is adrift 390 miles southwest of Iceland on her way from Reykjavík to Nuuk in Greenland, according to Iceland-headquartered Eimskip.

“The Icelandic coast guard vessel Freyja is en route to tow Dettifoss to port in Reykjavík, and is expected to reach Dettifoss tomorrow evening,” said the owner in a statement on July 9.

As it is reported, the vessel and crew are not considered to be in danger, and the weather in the area is calm.

The vessel is carrying goods bound for Greenland. Once the vessel arrives in Reykjavík, repairs are expected to be completed promptly, Eimskip said, adding that Dettifoss is expected to resume her schedule next week.

“Customers will be informed of the situation,” the company added.

Eimskip is a transportation company in the North Atlantic providing container and reefer liner services with connections to international markets and is specialized in worldwide freight forwarding services with focus on frozen and chilled commodities.
