Port of Long Beach celebrates 20 years of sustainability

The Port of Long Beach has released its latest Green Port Progress Report, marking two decades of environmental leadership and outlining its ambitious path toward zero-emission operations.
This report highlights the evolution of the Port since its adoption of the groundbreaking Green Port Policy in 2005. Over the years, Long Beach has positioned itself as a global leader in sustainable port operations, reducing harmful emissions while maintaining cargo growth.
”In collaboration with its neighbors and business partners, the Port of Long Beach is driving innovation toward cleaner operations for a cleaner future,” said Rex Richardson, Mayor, Long Beach.
”It’s undeniable we have made tremendous progress on our Green Port commitment through our air quality, water and habitat restoration programs, green construction practices and clean energy and technology development,” commented Mario Cordero, CEO, Port of Long Beach.
Since 2005, the Port has slashed diesel particulate matter by 92%, nitrogen oxides by 71%, and sulfur oxides by 98%, even as container volumes rose by 20%.
”These achievements demonstrate that clean air and cargo growth can go hand in hand, reinforcing the Port’s position as a key driver of the U.S. economy during a time of unprecedented change in the shipping industry,” said Bonnie Lowenthal, Long Beach Harbor Commission President.
The Port’s current and upcoming efforts include installing charging stations for electric trucks and locomotives, expanding shore power infrastructure, and adding hydrogen fueling facilities.
