NorthStandard expands in Japan with new Imabari office

Marine insurer NorthStandard is growing its footprint in Asia with a new office set to open in Imabari, Japan, in September 2025.
The move strengthens the company’s presence in Western Japan and brings it closer to a key hub of the country’s shipping industry. Firstly, Imabari is home to about 70 ocean shipping companies and manages nearly a third of Japan’s fleet.
Also, the new office will work alongside NorthStandard’s existing Tokyo operation, offering more localized support to shipowners in the Ehime and Hiroshima regions.
Moreover, Nobuhiko Sakamoto, currently P&I Claims Director for Asia-Pacific, will lead the Imabari office. The expansion responds to increased demand for the company’s claims services and marine insurance expertise in the region.
“Establishing a dedicated operation in Western Japan unequivocally underscores our long-term commitment to maritime Japan as a whole,” said David Roberts, Head of Asia-Pacific, NorthStandard.
“NorthStandard is dedicated to delivering unparalleled service excellence at the local level. Our aim is to provide robust support to our members as they navigate the increasing complexities and challenges of the modern maritime landscape,” added Sakamoto.
Additionally, Imabari hosts the well-known Bari-Ship maritime fair, drawing thousands of professionals from around the world every two years.
NorthStandard’s Asia-Pacific network already includes offices in Singapore, Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Seoul, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Nelson.
