BNSF opens new intermodal facility in Salt Lake City

BNSF Railway has officially opened a new intermodal facility in Salt Lake City. The launch marks a major step in expanding inland logistics in the western U.S..

BNSF partnered with Patriot Rail and the Utah Inland Port Authority (UIPA) to bring the project to life. Local leaders, including Utah Governor Spencer Cox, joined the ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the milestone.

The new 43-acre site sits just five miles from Salt Lake City International Airport. It connects directly with BNSF’s new intermodal service linking California and Salt Lake City. Patriot Rail will manage terminal operations and support infrastructure at the facility.

”This site boosts our efficiency and gives our customers more flexible, competitive options,” stated Tom Williams, EVP and Chief Marketing Officer, BNSF . ”Thanks to Patriot Rail and UIPA for helping us strengthen supply chains from the West Coast to Utah and beyond.”

Brandy Christian, CEO, Patriot Rail, called the project a win for long-term logistics planning. ”This is smart, scalable infrastructure that meets today’s needs and supports future growth,” she said.

Utah leaders also emphasized the project’s broader economic impact.

”This is a game changer,” said Abby Osborne, UIPA board chair. ”It gives Utah manufacturers and shippers more options and more competition. It’s a key piece of our vision to make Utah a logistics leader.”

The facility adds capacity, cuts travel time, and supports a more resilient, cost-efficient supply chain.
