ABS expands immersive maritime training with acquisition of MetaSHIP

ABS has signed an agreement to acquire the MetaSHIP intellectual property and vessel simulator software assets from Orka Informatics, strengthening its digital training portfolio under ABS Training Solutions. The acquisition, pending Turkish regulatory approval, will enable ABS to scale immersive, game-based maritime training across global learning centers in Qatar, Greece, and Singapore, as well as through onboard and remote delivery.
MetaSHIP combines realistic vessel simulations and gamified training to help seafarers develop operational skills without needing to step aboard. Its ODENES platform tracks progress and assessments, while the Navigational Skill and Behavioral Assessment module measures performance and decision-making.
“The maritime workforce must manage new technologies, hybrid systems, and complex regulations. Training that builds real competence, not just compliance, is essential for safety, sustainability, and competitiveness,” said ABS Chairman and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki.
Levent Şen, MetaSHIP’s creator, added, “MetaSHIP was designed to make maritime learning immersive and accessible. Seeing it evolve under ABS’ global leadership is deeply rewarding.”
ABS also appointed Campbell Smith as Senior Vice President of ABS Training Solutions to lead the expansion of its advanced learning programs. Smith joins from Maersk Training, bringing extensive experience in global maritime operations and training strategy.
ABS President and COO John McDonald said, “Campbell’s appointment reflects our commitment to equipping the industry with the tools and insight needed to operate safely in an increasingly complex environment.”
With this acquisition, ABS is advancing a new era of digital maritime education, blending technology, safety, and innovation to prepare seafarers for the future.
