DCSA launches API Standard for VGM
The Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) has released its first API-based standard for Verified Gross Mass (VGM) exchange. The standard aims to simplify compliance, increase transparency, and accelerate digitalisation in container shipping.
Since 2016, the IMO’s SOLAS Convention has required containers to be weighed before loading. Currently, VGM data is shared via emails, spreadsheets, carrier portals, or EDI messages, each with different formats and validation rules. This fragmented system increases manual work, reduces visibility, and raises operational risks.
The DCSA VGM Standard introduces a unified API for real-time submission, validation, and exchange of verified container weights. It allows shippers, carriers, and terminals to automate processes, improve data quality, and integrate VGM seamlessly into existing systems. The standard aligns with SOLAS requirements and complements other DCSA APIs, including Booking, Track & Trace, and eBL.
Industry leaders contributed to the standard’s development to ensure interoperability and streamlined workflows.
“Sharing VGM through mixed formats creates inconsistencies across the industry,” said Angel L. Muñoz, Senior Director Global Logistics, Al Dahra Holding. “The DCSA standard enhances accuracy, streamlines communication, and supports reliable operations.”
John Kim, Senior Manager at HMM, added: “Including VGM in API workflows enables true end-to-end integration and seamless information flow.”
Kristina Jumelet, Product Owner at DCSA, said: “The VGM Standard addresses a long-standing gap in automation and user experience. It is a key step toward a fully digital, traceable container shipping ecosystem.”
