Stena Line holds naming ceremony for new hybrid vessel

Stena Line has officially named its newest vessel, Stena Futura, during a ceremony at Belfast Harbour attended by more than 200 guests, marking a major milestone in the company’s 30-year partnership with the city and its shift toward greener shipping.

The 147-metre hybrid freight ferry is the first of two next-generation “NewMax” vessels designed specifically for the busy Belfast–Heysham route. Built with methanol-ready engines, hybrid propulsion, a 9 MWh battery system and shore-power capability, Stena Futura forms a key part of Stena Line’s plan to cut CO₂ emissions by 30% by 2030.

The vessel was named by its Godmother, Dr Madeleine Olsson Ericksson, representing the Olsson family, owners of Stena Line. Senior political and port representatives, including Northern Ireland’s First Minister Michelle O’Neill, Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly, and Belfast Harbour Chair Dr Theresa Donaldson, also attended.

Stena Line CEO Niclas Mårtensson said: “The naming of Stena Futura is a proud moment for Stena Line and Belfast Harbour… This vessel along with sister ship Stena Connecta represents over £100 million investment in our Irish Sea network and clearly demonstrates our ongoing commitment to meeting growing freight demand, while leading the way in sustainable shipping.”

Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly added: “Stena Line has been part of the fabric of the Northern Ireland economy for decades… This investment of over £100 million is a testament to Stena’s belief in our potential and confidence in our region.”

Belfast Harbour CEO Joe O’Neil highlighted the strength of the long-term partnership, noting that Stena Futura is already performing well on the route and that the arrival of sister vessel Stena Connecta in early 2026 will unlock even more freight potential.

Key specifications of Stena Futura:

  • Length: 147m

  • Beam: 26.3m

  • Freight capacity: 2,800 lane metres (an 80% increase over current vessels)

  • Propulsion: Dual-fuel methanol hybrid + 9 MWh battery

  • Service: 12 weekly sailings on Belfast–Heysham

  • Future-ready: Designed for wind-assist and full shore-power integration

Together with Stena Connecta, Stena Futura will increase freight capacity on the Belfast–Heysham corridor by 40%, offering hauliers and exporters more efficient and sustainable transport options.
