Yang Ming ship ran aground due to change in currents and lack of contingency planning

The grounding of a Yang Ming ship in Keelung port a year ago was due to unforeseen circumstances and contingency planning failure, according to the Taiwan Transportation Safety Board (TTSB).

Released on 10 December, the TTSB’s report stated that the pilot of the 2013-built 8,626 TEU YM Unicorn had expected westward currents in the early hours of 12 December 2024 and, accordingly, steered the ship towards the east side of Keelung’s inbound channel. YM Unicorn, serving the transpacific lane at the time, was arriving from Kaohsiung.
