DHL and CMA CGM expand biofuel use to cut ocean freight emissions

DHL Global Forwarding and CMA CGM have agreed to jointly use 8,990 tonnes of second-generation biofuel to reduce emissions from ocean freight.

The initiative will use UCOME biofuel and is expected to cut around 25,000 tonnes of CO₂e on a well-to-wake basis. The reductions apply to shipments moved under DHL’s GoGreen Plus service and mark a key milestone in the companies’ decarbonisation partnership.

CMA CGM will physically bunker the biofuel across its fleet. DHL will apply the emissions savings through its Book & Claim model. The approach allows customers to lower the carbon intensity of their supply chains without requiring their cargo to be carried on a specific vessel using the fuel.

The collaboration combines DHL’s GoGreen Plus service with CMA CGM’s ACT+ low-carbon shipping offering. Together, they enable shippers to cut well-to-wake emissions by up to 80% compared with conventional marine fuels.

DHL said the agreement supports customers in meeting climate targets while accelerating the industry’s shift to alternative fuels. CMA CGM said the partnership demonstrates how collaboration can scale lower-carbon shipping solutions.

Both companies have set net-zero emissions targets for 2050. CMA CGM said it has already reduced the carbon intensity of its shipping operations by 57% since 2008. Also, CMA CGM continues to invest in alternative fuels and dual-fuel vessels.

DHL and CMA CGM said they will continue to explore ways to expand the use of lower-carbon fuels and further decarbonise global supply chains.
