MOL, SINOPEC and Marubeni sign MOU on marine biodiesel supply

Mitsui O.S.K. Line signed a memorandum of understanding with China’s largest fuel supplier SINOPEC and trading house Marubeni. This MoU will establish a long-term supply system for marine biodiesel fuel.

Under the agreement, the partners will work to secure a stable and continuous supply of biodiesel fuel in China. MOL will promote the use of biodiesel in marine transport. Also, SINOPEC and Marubeni will develop storage, transport infrastructure and supply ports.

The move supports decarbonisation efforts in the shipping industry, which faces tightening environmental regulations and growing pressure to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Biodiesel fuel is a drop-in alternative to conventional marine fuels. It can be used in existing ship engines without modification and offers significant lifecycle CO₂ emission reductions compared with heavy fuel oil.

MOL said demand for biodiesel is expected to grow and highlighted China’s role as a key supplier of biodiesel feedstocks. The company aims to establish an early framework for fuel procurement in cooperation with SINOPEC and Marubeni.

Moreover, the agreement aligns with MOL’s environmental strategy under its “BLUE ACTION 2035” management plan. The group targets net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Lastly, MOL said the MOU marks an important step toward expanding the use of low-carbon fuels and reducing emissions across global marine transport.
