Indian Coast Guard inducts Pollution Control Vessel Samudra Pratap
The Indian Coast Guard has inducted ICGS Samudra Pratap, the first of two indigenously built Pollution Control Vessels. The ceremony took place on January 5, 2026, at Goa Shipyard Limited.
The vessel was designed and built to the Classification Rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS). The classification highlights IRS’s role in supporting India’s domestic shipbuilding and strengthening national maritime capabilities.
Samudra Pratap features advanced pollution response and maritime safety systems. These include pollution detection equipment, side sweeping arms, floating booms, a high-capacity surface skimmer, a pollution response boat, portable barges, and an onboard pollution control laboratory. The vessel also carries an external fire-fighting system.
With more than 60% indigenous content, the vessel supports the Government of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. It will play a key role in pollution control enforcement, maritime law enforcement, search and rescue operations, and protection of India’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
“The classification of Samudra Pratap reflects another successful collaboration between the Indian Coast Guard, Goa Shipyard Limited, and the Indian Register of Shipping,” said Cdr KK Dhawan, Head of Defence at IRS. “It demonstrates India’s growing capability to deliver complex, mission-critical vessels built to global standards.”
