UK-led consortium unveils plan for nuclear-powered shipping

The UK has launched the Maritime Nuclear Consortium. The move aims to speed up shipping decarbonisation. Lloyd’s Register leads the group.

The consortium brings together experts from nuclear, maritime, insurance, and regulatory sectors. It seeks to set global standards for nuclear-powered commercial ships.

Nuclear power produces zero CO₂. Advanced modular reactors can run for years without refuelling. Ships can sail at full design speed without slow steaming.

The core members include Lloyd’s Register, Rolls-Royce, Babcock International Group, Global Nuclear Security Partners, Stephenson Harwood, and NorthStandard.

The UK wants to secure first-mover advantage. Other nations are moving fast. Industry leaders warn the UK could lose influence, jobs, and investment without swift action.

The consortium’s first programme focuses on delivery. It will demonstrate a Statement of Design Acceptability for an advanced modular reactor. It will develop a class certification framework. It will define security and safeguards requirements. It will also establish insurance pathways and publish industry guidance.

Lloyd’s Register CEO Nick Brown said nuclear power is ready for commercial shipping. He pointed to decades of safe naval use. He said advanced reactors bring stronger safeguards.

Rolls-Royce said collaboration is vital to shape international rules. The company highlighted its full lifecycle reactor experience.

NorthStandard said insurance builds confidence in new technology. It stressed the need for strong risk management and regulation.

More than 700 nuclear reactors already operate in naval fleets. The UK now aims to adapt this experience for commercial shipping. The goal is net-zero vessels and long-term maritime leadership.
