Suez Canal sees traffic recovery as shipping lines plan return

The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has reported strong signs of recovery in vessel traffic, with the number of transiting vessels up 5.8%, tonnage up 16%, and revenues rising 18.5% in the first half of the 2025/2026 financial year compared to the same period last year.

During a meeting with representatives from 20 shipping lines and maritime agencies, SCA Chairman Adm. Ossama Rabiee emphasized that stability in the Red Sea and Bab El-Mandab region, supported by Egypt’s diplomatic efforts, is encouraging shipping lines to resume transit through the Canal. Several major operators, including Maersk and CMA CGM, have already restarted services, while others are considering trial transits.

Participants highlighted the SCA’s continuous investments in navigational safety, incentives, and digital services, which help shipping lines plan their routes efficiently and reduce costs. Proposals were made for further incentives, insurance reductions, and international events to reassure clients of the Canal’s security and efficiency.

Adm. Rabiee concluded that the SCA will continue direct engagement with clients, implement feedback, and maintain communications to facilitate the return of vessels, underscoring the Suez Canal’s role as a vital, cost-effective route for global trade.
