Alex Gregg-Smith named incoming chair of IACS

The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has elected Alex Gregg-Smith, President of Marine & Offshore at Bureau Veritas, as its next Chair. He will take up the role on 1 July 2026, serving until 31 December 2027.

Gregg-Smith, who has over 20 years of experience with Bureau Veritas and leadership roles in shipyards and shipowners, becomes the third elected IACS Council Chair following governance reforms introduced in 2020.

On his election, he stated: “The maritime industry is at a crucial stage in its technical, digital and environmental evolution. I am honoured to oversee IACS at this pivotal time.”

IACS Secretary General Robert Ashdown highlighted that Gregg-Smith’s election reflects the Member Societies’ commitment to providing impartial, expert guidance to regulators and the maritime industry, supporting safer, cleaner shipping.

IACS sets classification rules and standards covering over 90% of the world’s cargo-carrying tonnage, contributing to ship safety, regulatory compliance, and maritime R&D.
