ABB to power new cable repair vessels for Orange Marine
ABB will supply an integrated power, propulsion, and automation system for two hybrid-electric cable repair vessels ordered by Orange Marine, a subsidiary of Orange Group.
Shipbuilder Colombo Dockyard PLC in Sri Lanka will construct the vessels. Delivery is scheduled for 2028 and 2029.
Advanced Propulsion and Automation
The ships will use ABB’s Azipod® propulsion system. It improves maneuverability and thrust during complex cable repair operations. The gearless design reduces lubrication needs and lowers maintenance costs.
The vessels will also feature the ABB Ability
800xA Integrated Automation System. This system lets crews manage onboard operations from a single interface.
An energy storage system and ABB’s PEMS
power management system will optimize energy use. These technologies help reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
Supporting Global Subsea Cables
The vessels will maintain submarine cables across the Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, and Red Sea.
Demand for cable repair ships is rising as global subsea networks expand. Industry forecasts show submarine cable length could grow 48% by 2040, while many existing maintenance vessels approach the end of their service life.
