OOCL Sunflower loses containers in North Pacific
An OOCL-operated containership lost multiple containers overboard while crossing the North Pacific in heavy weather conditions.
The 16,800 TEU vessel OOCL Sunflower reportedly lost 32 containers on 3 March 2026 while sailing south of the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, en route from Taiwan to Long Beach.
In addition to the containers lost at sea, a further 57 containers were reported damaged or displaced on deck due to the severe weather encountered during the voyage.
Following the incident, the vessel continued its journey and has since arrived at the Port of Long Beach, where it is currently berthed at the Long Beach Container Terminal.
The incident highlights ongoing risks to container shipping posed by harsh weather conditions in the North Pacific, particularly during winter and early spring months.
