Swedish ferry company Stena Line has launched its second methanol-ready NewMax hybrid ferry at China Merchants Jingling Shipyard.

Following the launching ceremony, the shipyard will now continue with the installation of the ferry’s interior, Stena Line said.
Stena Connecta, scheduled for delivery in early 2026, is one of two new ships ordered to serve the Belfast – Heysham route, a key trade corridor across the Irish Sea. Its sister vessel, Stena Futura, is currently being fitted out ahead of entering service in autumn 2025.
The hybrid vessels are equipped to operate on methanol fuel and will also be enhanced with built-in technologies to enable the use of both battery propulsion and shore power, when available.
Stena Line said it was working closely with methanol suppliers, ensuring future volumes of e-methanol and fulfilling the goal of cutting 30% of its CO2 emissions by 2030.
Uniquely, Stena Connecta will be fitted with rotor sails, which harness wind power to provide auxiliary propulsion to the vessel, therefore reducing fuel consumption and emissions, the ferry company noted.
