President Donald Trump increased tariffs on imports from China by an additional 10% on Monday while reiterating 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico will go into effect Tuesday.

The president amended an executive order he signed last month implementing a 10% tariff hike on China, upping the ordered rate to 20%.

According to the amended order, China’s “failure” to cooperate with the United States to stem the importation of fentanyl and other illicit drugs spurred the change.

China said it will take countermeasures against the rise in tariffs, according to a March 4 statement from the Ministry of Commerce. The country responded to the initial 10% increase by levying tariffs on certain products from the U.S., including coal and liquefied natural gas, crude oil, agricultural machinery and some cars.

Trump is still planning to lift a month-long pause on 25% tariffs for imports from Mexico and Canada tomorrow, he said during a press briefing Monday. The tariffs were delayed from an original implementation date of Feb. 4 after both countries agreed to address cross-border migration and fentanyl trafficking.

During Monday’s press briefing, Trump also said the U.S. will enact reciprocal tariffs on all trading partners on April 2. The president plans to enact tariffs on imported agricultural products the same day, according to a Truth Social post Monday.
