Osaka launches ship-to-ship LNG bunkering service
Osaka Gas Co., Ltd. announced on 21 April that it has launched Japan’s first shore-to-ship LNG bunkering service, supplying liquefied natural gas directly to vessels at its Senboku LNG Terminal in Osaka.
As informed, the inaugural delivery was made to the VERDE HERALDO, an LNG-powered vessel operated by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and used by JFE Steel Corporation to transport steelmaking materials. This new service complements Osaka Gas’ existing truck-to-ship LNG bunkering operations, active since 2019.
Together, these offerings help address the limited LNG fueling infrastructure available for ships in Japan. Looking ahead, the company plans to introduce a ship-to-ship LNG bunkering service by fiscal 2026.
According to the company, Osaka Gas also plans to explore e-methane as a future alternative fuel.
