In his January 20 inaugural address, President Donald Trump said that the Panama Canal had been “foolishly given” to Panama. “And above all,” he said, “China is operating the Panama Canal. And we didn’t give it to China. We gave it to Panama, and we’re taking it back.” One of the arguments on which assertions that “China is operating the Panama Canal” is based is that the Panama ports at either end of the canal are operated by subsidiaries of Hong Kong based CK Hutchison Holdings.

That looks set to end.

CK Hutchison has reached an agreement that will see the BlackRock-TiL Consortium (BlackRock Inc., Global Infrastructure Partners and Terminal Investment Limited) acquire Hutchison Port Holdings’ 90% interests in Panama Ports Company (PPC), which owns and operates the ports of Balboa and Cristobal in Panama.
