Research indicates that around 25% of seafarers encounter bullying or harassment (with this figure exceeding 50% among women), while a staggering 90% report having no weekly day off—frequently enough compounded by limited internet access during voyages.

In October 2023, following interviews with female seafarers across twenty-three nationalities, the All Aboard Alliance launched its Diversity@Sea pilot project aimed at tackling identified challenges head-on. Over ten months involving twelve proactive shipping firms—and feedback from around four hundred crew members—the project tested various co-designed solutions which informed each guideline within this new framework:
