Taiwan’s Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation is making waves in the shipping industry with a new order for three methanol dual-fuel-ready containerships, each capable of carrying 8,000 TEUs. this move is part of their ambitious fleet expansion plan and comes as they partner with Shoei Kisen Kaisha for construction at Imabari Shipbuilding in Japan. These vessels are set too hit the water between 2028 and 2029.

this decision follows a stellar financial performance, with Yang Ming reporting nearly $2 billion in net profits for 2024. Factors like the Red Sea crisis, ongoing port congestion, and robust growth in emerging Asian markets have all contributed to this success.

The new ships mark just the beginning of Yang Ming’s broader strategy approved by its board,which could see up to thirteen vessels added to their fleet—ranging from 8,000 to an notable 15,000 TEUs. The company emphasizes that these ships will feature energy-efficient engines designed not only for immediate fuel savings but also adaptable for future choice fuels.
