Google Partners to Pioneer Development of Three Advanced Nuclear Reactor Sites

Google is teaming up with Elementl Power to develop advanced nuclear reactors at three locations, aiming to meet the increasing energy needs of its data centers.

In a recent declaration, Google revealed that each facility will produce a minimum of 600 megawatts. Once operational, Google has the option to purchase this power.The initial funding from Google will support early project phases like site approvals and securing connections to the power grid.Elementl will then seek additional investments for construction.

Additionally, in October 2024, Google struck a deal with Kairos Power for energy from a new series of compact nuclear reactors. The first unit is slated to be operational by 2030, with more expected by 2035.Other tech giants like Amazon and Microsoft are also exploring similar paths as they search for lasting energy solutions for their data centers.

A report from Goldman Sachs forecasts that demand for data center electricity could surge by 160%, perhaps consuming about 8% of U.S. electricity by 2030. Meanwhile, the International Energy Agency noted that in 2022 alone, data centers were responsible for approximately 1.5% of global electricity use and around 3% in the united States.
