Advancements in Voltage Transformation Initiative
SLOVAKIA: In a significant move towards modernizing its rail system, Slovakia is advancing its electrification efforts that began back in 2005. The infrastructure manager,ŽSR,has transitioned the overhead electrification from the older 3 kV DC to a more efficient 25 kV AC on another segment of the key Bratislava – Žilina – Košice line (Corridor V).
The latest upgrade spans approximately 17.9 kilometers between Bytča (Predmier) and Žilina-Predmestie (Strážov),with work wrapping up in April.
This section was initially electrified using the outdated 3 kV DC system back in October of ’60. Fast forward to June of this year, and the Púchov – Bytča stretch made the switch to AC power.
Looking ahead, after finishing enhancements at Žilina junction—set for an AC traction changeover by early 2026—the next targets for conversion will be routes extending from Žilina to Vrútky and Kysucké Nové Mesto.
