Amazon Unveils State-of-the-Art Robotics Hub in Central Virginia
Amazon is gearing up to launch a massive robotics fulfillment center in Goochland County, Virginia, which is set to create over 1,000 new jobs.Governor Glenn Youngkin shared the exciting news, highlighting it as a strong endorsement of Virginia’s welcoming business climate and skilled workforce.
This new facility, dubbed RIC6, will span an extraordinary 3.1 million square feet with a footprint of 650,000 square feet on a sprawling 107-acre site located at 2022 Ashland Road.
“Amazon’s growth in Virginia showcases the teamwork among state and local entities dedicated to thoughtful growth,” remarked Secretary of Commerce and Trade Juan Pablo Segura. He emphasized that this initiative stems from careful planning in Goochland County alongside important infrastructure investments by the state.
The center will focus on processing smaller items such as books, toys, and electronics. Employees will utilize advanced robotics technology for picking, packing, and shipping orders efficiently. Amazon already has similar centers operating in Suffolk and Virginia Beach.
Holly Sullivan, Amazon’s Vice president for Worldwide Economic Development and Public Policy stated enthusiastically: “We’re thrilled to break ground on our fourth robotics fulfillment center here in Virginia—this reflects our ongoing commitment to innovation and job creation.”
Transportation improvements were crucial for this project’s success. The state along with Goochland County secured funds for constructing a new diverging diamond interchange at Ashland Road—just under a mile from the facility. “Robust transportation infrastructure is vital for attracting businesses,” noted Secretary of Transportation W. Sheppard Miller III.
Since 2010 alone, Amazon has poured over $135 billion into Virginia’s economy—creating more than 42,000 direct jobs while supporting an additional 195,000 positions across related sectors. The company has also expanded its presence through Whole Foods stores and Amazon Fresh locations throughout the state.
State Senator Luther Cifers commented on this achievement: “Thanks to Governor Youngkin’s leadership making Virginia an attractive business hub—and Goochland County’s efforts over the past decade—the area has become one of the best places in the state to live and work.”
In essence, this development not only signifies economic growth but also highlights how strategic partnerships can led to substantial community benefits—a model that other regions might look towards when aiming for similar advancements.
