The unexpected passing of Captain Michele Bartolomei, who helmed the Diamond Princess for Princess Cruises, has left a profound impact on both crew and passengers. The tragedy unfolded in the early hours of May 19, 2025, while the ship was docked in Taiwan during its East Asia cruise.

Residing in British Columbia, Canada, he spent many seasons navigating Alaska’s inside Passage from Seattle or Vancouver while indulging his love for fishing with his own boat in the Pacific Northwest.
Earlier this year, he shared moments aboard Crown Princess alongside Captain Mario Consentino during a photo session that showcased camaraderie among captains.
The Diamond Princess itself is continuing its scheduled itinerary despite this loss; it departed Yokohama on May 16 and made an overnight stop in Keelung before heading towards Ishigaki and Naha in Japan. The cruise will wrap up back at Yokohama on May 25 before embarking on another ten-night adventure around Japan that includes stops at various ports like Shimizu and Nagasaki.
Later this year, plans are set for Diamond Princess to reposition itself to Singapore as part of its winter cruise season across Southeast Asia until late November.
