Unveiling the Future: The Launch of Redmond's Downtown Link Extension
In the USA, a new chapter in public transport has begun with the recent launch of a 5.5 km extension of Sound Transit’s light rail 2 Line. This stretch connects Redmond Technology to two fresh stops: Marymoor Village and Downtown Redmond, officially opening its doors to passengers on May 10.
To celebrate this milestone, Microsoft stepped up as a local hero by offering complimentary shuttle services for attendees. Thay also sponsored various festivities that included family-friendly activities, delicious food and drinks, and special commemorative cards featuring regional day passes.
The light rail now operates between South Bellevue and Downtown Redmond every ten minutes from early morning until late evening throughout the week.
This Downtown Redmond link Extension marks the first segment launched under the Sound Transit 3 initiative approved by voters back in 2016. Excitingly, two additional openings are on the horizon within the next year! One will complete the line from Bellevue to Seattle via a stunning floating bridge over Lake Washington—set for early 2026—and another will extend Line services to Federal Way later that same year.
“This expansion into Downtown Redmond and Marymoor Village is transformative,” remarked US Representative Suzan DelBene.”It not only enhances transportation options but also promotes growth and strengthens our communities’ connections. This is just scratching the surface; soon we’ll have seamless access all the way into Seattle along with other regional transit systems.”
A collaborative effort between stacy Witbeck and Kuney was responsible for designing and constructing this extension. The design phase was led by Jacobs and Hatch while Hensel Phelps took charge of building stops. Mass Electric alongside Modern Rail Systems handled everything related to railway systems including overhead electrification, power supplies, signaling, and communications—all completed within an impressive $1.5 billion budget according to Sound Transit.
