Global Heavy Lift and Mooring Specialists Establish New Hub in South Tyneside

Bardex, a prominent player in heavy-duty marine engineering, has just launched a new office in south Tyneside. This US-based company is known for its expertise in heavy lifting adn mooring equipment tailored for shipbuilding, repair, and offshore industries. They’ve brought on board Ian Finch, the former Commercial Director of Port of Tyne,to lead their UK operations from the Quadrus Centre in Boldon.

This new location will serve as Bardex’s regional hub to tap into markets across Europe, the Middle east, and Africa (EMEA). The choice of South Tyneside is no accident; it boasts a rich maritime heritage and strong capabilities in shipping and offshore wind energy sectors. Bardex aims to enhance its UK engineering and manufacturing capabilities for products like hydraulic chain jacks and mooring connectors—essential tools for floating offshore wind projects and also oil & gas ventures.

Ian expressed his enthusiasm about the Quadrus Centre: “It’s an ideal spot for our UK base—right at the centre of offshore wind innovation with easy access to major roads, ports, and Newcastle Airport.” After working with Bardex as a consultant throughout 2024, he was thrilled to take on a permanent role with this vibrant company focused on growth opportunities within this region.

The support from South Tyneside’s Business Investment Team has been invaluable. They’ve assisted Bardex not only in finding an excellent location but also in planning future expansions and recruitment efforts within the borough.

Bardex operates out of Santa Barbara but has established offices globally along with manufacturing facilities that produce innovative solutions such as:

  • OmniLift™: A versatile platform designed for launching ships or floating turbines.
  • OmniCrane™: A cutting-edge crane that facilitates safe integration of floating wind turbines.
  • OmniDock™: A mobile dock featuring an integrated OmniLift™ system.
  • BarMoor™ Quick Connector: This tool allows rapid connection/disconnection without personnel onboard—a game-changer for safety during operations.

South Tyneside Council is backing Bardex Energy UK’s transition into their new headquarters at Quadrus. Cllr Margaret Meling highlighted how attracting global firms like Bardex is crucial for local economic growth. She believes that under Ian’s leadership, they are poised to thrive within EMEA markets.

Bardex’s move signifies not just corporate expansion but also reinforces South Tyneside’s status as a hub for maritime innovation—a win-win scenario!
