Scenic Summit Journeys: The Allure of New Rack Train Orders for Mountain Railways

In Switzerland, the Montreux-Vevey-Riviera transport authority has teamed up with Stadler to roll out eight new rack trainsets featuring expansive panoramic windows. this upgrade is designed to enhance the experience for tourists eager to soak in breathtaking views of the Alps and Lake Geneva.

The contract, finalized on May 20, represents a important step in revitalizing the scenic 10 km stretch from Montreux to Rochers-de-Naye, which sits at nearly 2,000 meters above sea level.

The new electric multiple units (EMUs) will be crafted at stadler’s facility in Bussnang and are set to hit the tracks by 2029. They will replace an aging fleet that has been in service for over four decades.

The design of these sleek trains is a collaboration between Montreux Oberland Bahn and Stadler, with creative input from Italian design house Pininfarina—known for their work on luxury vehicles and also responsible for MOB’s Goldenpass Express trainsets.

The three-car configurations will measure about 40 meters long and accommodate up to 216 passengers across two classes. Notably, they’ll feature regenerative braking systems along with energy-efficient air conditioning—perfect for those hot summer days!

MOB CEO Georges Oberson expressed excitement about this project: “We’re witnessing a change in mountain railways; this could very well be the most stunning train ever constructed.”
