Newly Unveiled Footage Chronicles the Last Moments of the Titan Submersible
The U.S. Coast Guard has shared footage that captures the tragic end of OceanGate’s Titan submersible as it descended toward the Titanic wreck site. This video, part of the evidence for the USCG Marine Board of Investigation, features Wendy Rush and Gary Foss monitoring communications from their support vessel, Polar Prince, on June 18, 2023. About 90 minutes into its dive at a depth nearing 3,300 meters, a significant sound was recorded—later confirmed to be the implosion of the submersible.
In a poignant moment caught on camera, Wendy Rush—who held a director position at OceanGate alongside her husband—reacted to what she described as a “bang.” The Coast Guard investigation later revealed that shortly after this incident, she received an erroneous text suggesting everything was normal and that two weights had been released. Regrettably, this message arrived just moments before disaster struck.
Tragically, five lives were lost in this incident: Stockton Rush (the CEO), along with four paying customers. Investigators have uncovered that OceanGate had been warned multiple times about safety issues related to TitanS experimental carbon fiber hull—a design experts feared might not withstand deep-sea pressures over time.
This catastrophe has sparked serious discussions about safety protocols in deep-sea tourism and raised alarms regarding unregulated expeditions into extreme environments.Experts are now urging caution when it comes to such adventures. The findings from the USCG’s extensive two-year investigation will be featured in an upcoming BBC documentary titled “Implosion: The Titanic Sub Disaster,” which aims to shed light on these critical issues surrounding deep-sea exploration.
