Exploring Alternatives to Diesel Traction: A Path Towards Sustainable Solutions
EUROPE: the Association of European Rail Rolling stock Lessors (AERRL) is diving into the next phase of its initiative aimed at achieving net-zero emissions for train operators.
Last year,AERRL released an initial decarbonization report crafted by Eolos in collaboration with key players like Crédit Agricole CIB,ING,KfW IPEX-Bank,and Société Générale. This report pinpointed viable short to medium-term alternatives to diesel-powered trains.
The current phase will see AERRL team up with Eolos and BelgiumS Infrabel to investigate various substitutes for traditional diesel fuel. Options on the table include hydrotreated vegetable oil, ammonia, renewable natural gas, as well as electric-battery and electro-diesel systems. these alternatives will be assessed against conventional diesel and full overhead electrification methods.
The research will focus on three specific scenarios:
- a long-haul multi-voltage freight corridor;
- a regional domestic freight line;
A thorough cost-benefit analysis led by Infrabel aims to shed light on future policy directions and investment strategies.
AERRL is committed to taking a proactive stance in shaping a roadmap towards a net-zero rail fleet while fostering collaboration across the rail industry and engaging with European institutions.
