China’s latest aircraft carrier, the Fujian, has just wrapped up its eighth sea trial, marking a significant milestone in its advancement. Launched in June 2022 and kicking off trials in May 2024, this vessel is the first of its kind for China to feature electromagnetic catapults—an impressive leap from the traditional ski-jump designs used on earlier carriers.A recent clip from China Central Television (CCTV) showcased the Fujian departing from Shanghai’s Jiangnan Shipyard and venturing into open waters. Prior to this event, maritime traffic was restricted around the yangtze River estuary to ensure safe passage.

while there hasn’t been any official word on actual aircraft launches during these trials, reports suggest that J-35 stealth fighters—tailored for catapult launches—were put through their paces. Earlier tests hinted at some “touch-and-go” maneuvers on deck, where planes land briefly before taking off again without fully stopping.

The J-35 fighter jet, previously known as FC-31 and developed by Shenyang Aircraft corporation for carrier operations, boasts features like foldable wings and advanced radar systems. It’s designed to operate effectively in high-threat maritime scenarios and can be likened to the U.S. F-35C.

The electromagnetic catapult system aboard Fujian represents a cutting-edge technology that enhances launch efficiency even with fully loaded aircraft. This innovation also opens doors for deploying larger planes such as early warning systems like the KJ-600.

For context, China’s first carrier—the Liaoning—completed ten sea trials before entering service; simultaneously occurring, Shandong needed nine trials. With eight already under its belt within just over a year of testing, experts speculate that Fujian could soon be operational. This new catapult system positions Fujian alongside elite vessels like the USS gerald R. Ford—the only other carrier globally utilizing similar technology. Compared to older steam-powered versions, electromagnetic systems offer improved accuracy and energy efficiency while accommodating a broader range of aircraft types including drones and transport planes.

Chinese state media assert that Fujian will significantly bolster the capabilities of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), enhancing flight sortie frequency while strengthening long-range escort missions and offshore defense strategies.

Meanwhile, Shandong remains active in drills around contested waters near Hainan province—a clear indication of china’s commitment to expanding military prowess. Reports indicate Beijing has finalized an agreement to supply 40 J-35A stealth jets to Pakistan’s Air Force (PAF), with deliveries anticipated by 2026.

Looking ahead at military expenditures reveals China’s budget set at $266 billion for 2025—a notable increase of 7.2% compared to last year—making it second only to America’s staggering $895 billion defense budget. For perspective: India allocates $75 billion while Russia stands at $126 billion.
