in the early hours of May 25, 2025, a bulk carrier measuring 93 meters and loaded with scrap metal found itself stuck near Klagshamn in southern Öresund, Sweden. The mishap occurred around 2:30 a.m. as the vessel was navigating north through the fairway.

the Swedish Coast Guard reported that the ship is firmly lodged on the seabed, which consists of sand and stone. An initial investigation has been launched to explore potential gross negligence in maritime operations and possible intoxication among crew members.

While ther’s no water intrusion into the cargo holds, one ballast tank—essential for maintaining stability—has taken on water due to the grounding incident. Fortunately, aside from this issue, all other systems on board are functioning normally.

The vessel carries approximately 69,000 liters of diesel fuel; though, so far there have been no signs of oil contamination in surrounding waters. The Coast guard has reassured that thay’re monitoring closely for any leaks but cautioned that risks could rise during salvage efforts.

Although grounded next to a busy fairway, maritime traffic remains unaffected by this incident.

Shortly after it happened, personnel from Coast Guard vessel KBV 314 along with officials from the Swedish Transport Agency boarded to start their investigations. A surveillance flight was scheduled later that morning to monitor for any potential oil spills from above.

Unfortunately, adverse weather conditions delayed divers’ inspections of both the hull and seabed until later Sunday afternoon. These assessments are crucial for understanding damage levels and planning recovery strategies effectively.

By May 26th, divers confirmed that not only is the ship securely aground but also its hull has sustained some damage. In response to these findings, authorities have established a continuous presence at the site while initiating an environmental rescue operation as a precautionary measure against possible oil leaks or further complications.

One crew member has been arrested under suspicion of gross negligence related to maritime safety; investigations are ongoing regarding their potential alcohol use at sea following directives from public prosecutors overseeing this case.

Before any recovery can commence successfully, a salvage plan must be developed by both the ship’s owner and an appointed salvage company—this plan will then need approval from both relevant agencies before moving forward. As it stands now, there’s no set timeline for when efforts will begin to refloat or relocate this stranded vessel.
