Unveiling the TransGuinéen: A New Era for Iron Ore Transport
As reported by industry sources, the frist of the Evolution Series ES43ACi diesel locomotives for Guinea’s TransGuinéen Railway has been revealed at Wabtec’s facility in Marhowra, India.
this railway project spans over 600 kilometers, connecting Port Moribana to Forécariah, Kassa, Nialinko, and the Simandou region. It aims to facilitate access to a rich iron ore deposit and is being developed through a partnership involving the national government (holding a 15% stake) and mining companies winning Consortium Simandou and Rio Tinto Simfer (both with a share of 42.5%). The financial responsibilities will be equally divided between these two firms that have also placed orders for Evolution Series ES43ACmi locomotives.
The inaugural locomotive unveiled is part of the Rio Tinto Simfer collaboration with Chalco Iron Ore Holdings.This joint venture made headlines with its substantial order worth $277 million back in July 2024.
this dual-cab engine boasts a powerful Evolution series engine rated at 4,500 horsepower.Designed in the USA,it promises remarkable fuel efficiency while performing reliably even under high-temperature conditions.
“This locomotive marks an significant milestone in our efforts to link the Simandou project with global markets while creating opportunities for local communities,” stated Charles Zimmermann, Global Head of Projects at Rio Tinto during its launch on May 27. “The entire TransGuinéen Railway is essential for moving high-quality iron ore from our mines to international buyers.”
