Stadler reveals Euro DuFour locomotive concept

EUROPE: Stadler has unveiled its Euro DuFour modular locomotive concept, intended to compete with the established Siemens Mobility Vectron and Alstom Traxx families in the four-axle loco market.

The initial customer for the Euro DuFour is Switzerland’s SBB Cargo, which signed a framework agreement for up to 129 multi-system electric loco at InnoTrans 2024.

Annoucing details of the design at the Transport Logistic trade fair in München, Stadler said the Euro DuFour would be offered in 25 kV 50 Hz, 15 kV 16·7 Hz, 3 kV DC and 1·5 kV DC electric versions, rated at 7 MW under AC electrification. It will also be offered in dual mode versions adding a 1 MW diesel engine or 2 MW battery pack to enable off-wire operation.

The maximum speed would be 160 or 230 km/h, and starting tractive effort 350 kN.

The TSI-compliant Euro DuFour locomotive is designed to minimise track access costs. With a lightweight monocoque structure of high strength steel, it will weigh under 80 tonnes, with a battery module adding an extra 10 tonnes. Stadler said the Euro DuFour is based on subsystems and components from proven locos.

The cabs will be equipped with HVAC and universal central driving desk, and the loco will be ready for the installation of digital automatic couplers and FRMCS.

It will initially be offered for operation in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The DuFour names come from the highest mountain peak in Switzerland, which is also the second highest in western Europe after Mont Blanc. The summit is itself named after Guillaume Henri Dufour, a Swiss engineer and soldier who created the first accurate map of Switzerland. The loco name is also a pun on number four, referring to the number of axles.
