According to a recent declaration from the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), they have reached an exciting milestone with the launch of a new inter-island passenger ferry in Mokpo, South Korea. This vessel is particularly noteworthy as it represents the first project from a Korean owner to receive classification by IRS, highlighting the institution’s expanding global influence.
Constructed by Miraero Shipbuilding, Ltd for Dea Bu Marine Transport Ltd., this ferry is designed for service between islands along Korea’s picturesque coastline. Interestingly, even though vessels operating in these waters aren’t legally required to be classified, the owner has chosen IRS Classification voluntarily. This decision reflects their trust in IRS and sets an significant example for future vessels in this category within regional maritime trade.
In just a few weeks, critical assessments will take place for this vessel, including inclining experiments and sea trials that will be carried out alongside the Flag Administration. The anticipated delivery date is set for late June 2025.
Mr. Saikat roychowdhury, who leads operations at IRS, remarked that “This initiative showcases our growing international presence and highlights our acceptance among discerning ship owners worldwide.” He further emphasized that Dae Bu Marine Transport’s choice to pursue IRS Classification not only validates their technical expertise but also marks significant progress in catering to vessels navigating Korean waters.
This growth could pave the way for more collaborations between local shipbuilders and international classification societies—an exciting prospect that may enhance safety standards and operational efficiency across various maritime sectors globally.
