The retail giant is launching drone delivery services at 100 locations in cities like Charlotte, N.C.; Tampa and Orlando, Fla.; Atlanta; and Houston. (Walmart via X)

Walmart Inc. is ramping up its efforts to enhance online shopping by introducing drone deliveries across five new cities. This initiative aims to speed up delivery times and cater to the growing demand for convenience among consumers.

The company will roll out these services at select stores in Charlotte, Tampa, orlando, Atlanta, and Houston while already operating similar programs in northwest Arkansas and Dallas-Fort worth. walmart claims it’s leading the way as the first retailer to implement drone deliveries on such a scale across multiple states.

Fast shipping has become crucial for Walmart as shoppers increasingly value quick service—and are willing to pay extra for it. The retailer notes that items frequently ordered via drones include fresh produce like fruits and vegetables, pet supplies, eggs, and even ice cream!

“When you know an item will arrive within 45 minutes,” said David Guggina, chief e-commerce officer of Walmart U.S., “you can really plan your day around that timeframe.” This adaptability is key for busy customers looking for reliable service.

bentonville-based Walmart anticipates achieving profitability in its online business this year—a significant milestone after pouring billions into competing against digital giants like Amazon.com Inc. E-commerce has been costly due to high freight rates and labor expenses; however, Walmart has been working diligently on cost-cutting measures through warehouse automation and order batching while also expanding services such as pharmacy offerings and late-night deliveries.

Citing data from Transport Topics’ Top 100 list of largest private carriers in North America shows that both Walmart and Amazon hold top positions—ranked first and twelfth respectively.

This latest expansion into drone delivery marks an enhanced collaboration between Walmart and Alphabet Inc.’s Wing division. Their partnership began back in 2023 when they initiated drone deliveries at two stores near Dallas. Wing holds FAA approvals allowing their drones to operate beyond visual line of sight up to six miles away from store locations. Additionally, collaborations with Zipline are underway in Texas and Arkansas as well.
