A recent publication by Jotun, a leading name in marine coatings, sheds light on the current state of biofouling management in the shipping industry. The report is based on insights gathered from 1,000 ship owners and operators across 11 countries and highlights the significant repercussions of poor biofouling practices, including regulatory fines and denied access to ports. The findings from the “Biofouling in Shipping” report indicate that while awareness around biofouling has improved over recent years, there are still considerable gaps in knowledge within the sector.“There’s a growing recognition among port authorities and ship operators about how crucial effective biofouling management is for reducing carbon emissions and safeguarding biodiversity,” noted Morten Sten Johansen, Global Category Director Hull Performance at Jotun. Despite this awareness, only 31% of respondents feel adequately informed about hull performance solutions—an area that remains critical given that 79% prioritize hull efficiency.
The report also uncovers some hidden costs associated with inadequate biofouling strategies. As a notable example:
– Nearly half (41%) have incurred penalties due to issues related to biofouling.
– About 38% have been turned away from ports as they didn’t meet compliance standards.
Petter Korslund, Regulatory Affairs Manager for Hull Performance at Jotun, pointed out an alarming trend: “Almost half (49%) of those surveyed actively avoid ports with strict regulations on biofouling—a tactic that’s becoming less viable as global standards tighten.” He emphasized that while regulations have traditionally focused on local or regional levels, there’s now a shift towards more comprehensive global frameworks aimed at simplifying compliance for ship operators.
Beyond regulatory challenges, operational impacts are significant as well. Over half (50.4%) of ship owners reported fuel inefficiencies linked to biofouling—this not only affects their bottom line but also hinders progress toward decarbonization goals. Alarmingly, one in five operators acknowledges they aren’t utilizing the most effective antifouling coatings available for their vessels.
Johansen remarked on this issue: “Our research shows an increasing understanding of how effective management can enhance operational efficiency; however, there’s still much room for growth.” he encouraged ship owners to adopt customized plans addressing their specific needs regarding hull performance—doing so could provide them with a competitive advantage while minimizing costs and environmental harm.
In today’s tight-margin habitat where every penny counts—and with new regulations looming—it’s crucial for companies to be proactive rather than reactive when it comes to managing hidden expenses related to biofouling.
Jotun unveiled these findings during Nor-Shipping as part of its commitment to clean shipping practices and aims to encourage stakeholders within the industry to prioritize strategic approaches toward managing biofouling amidst evolving regulatory landscapes.
