Coventry Launches Innovative Street-Level Light Rail Testing
As reported by Rail Business UK, the Coventry Very Light Rail (VLR) prototype is currently undergoing trials on a 220-meter stretch of track right in the heart of the city.
the testing kicked off on May 30,allowing select guests and pre-registered members of the public to experience a ride. This phase follows extensive evaluations conducted on a private track at the Very Light Rail National Innovation Center located in Dudley.
The initiative, spearheaded by Coventry City Council, aims to provide an affordable alternative to conventional light rail systems. The goal is aspiring: constructing a VLR line could take just half as long and cost less than half that of conventional tramways, making it feasible for smaller cities.
This innovative VLR system features a unique track design that allows for speedy and cost-effective installation without needing major excavations or costly utility adjustments. Additionally, it includes a lightweight battery-operated vehicle capable of accommodating up to sixty passengers.
The council has indicated that preliminary market assessments have uncovered “numerous opportunities” for VLR implementation both within the UK and internationally, projecting an annual market potential reaching £2.3 billion by the year 2040.
