Stadler Chosen to Deliver Trams for Thüringer Waldbahn and Gotha Streetcar Network

according to a recent announcement, Thüringer Waldbahn & Straßenbahn Gotha has partnered with Stadler to introduce state-of-the-art low-floor trams for its meter-gauge network.

This deal, revealed on June 2 after an international bidding process, includes the delivery of four initial vehicles along with extensive maintenance support. The government of Thüringen is contributing €10 million towards the total project cost of €24.6 million, while local funding will cover the rest.

The contract also includes options for acquiring four additional trams and two more later on. This initiative aims to phase out older trams that have been in service for over four decades and enhance accessibility across the fleet.

The new Tramlink models will feature five sections and a bidirectional design made from stainless steel. Each tram will measure 32.5 meters in length and be about 2,450 mm wide at seat height, accommodating up to 180 passengers with comfortable seating for fifty. They are designed entirely as low-floor vehicles equipped with intercoms and emergency buttons specifically for wheelchair users.

The design incorporates five doors on each side along with TFT screens providing real-time updates for passengers. Enhanced insulation paired with heat recovery options will boost energy efficiency significantly. The driver’s cab is crafted to ensure comfort, excellent visibility, and user-friendly controls.

The first batch from Stadler’s Valencia facility is expected between Q3 and Q4 of 2027, aiming for operational readiness by July of the following year.

TWSB Managing Director Karl-heinz koch expressed enthusiasm about this investment: “With Tramlink coming into play,we’re stepping into a new era of local transport.” He highlighted that these modern vehicles promise improved comfort and accessibility while also slashing maintenance expenses—a major win for both commuters and the city itself.

The TWSB network spans urban routes totaling approximately 7.5 km that connect key locations like the city center to main stations and hospitals; it also features an inter-city route extending over an impressive distance of around 18.2 km towards Bad Tabarz with a branch leading to Waltershausen.

Council member Onno Eckert remarked that this marks the first acquisition of new trams since the late ’80s—a significant milestone indeed! He emphasized how crucial this step is toward modernizing tram services in their area while showcasing commitment from both district officials and stakeholders toward advancing TWSB’s future progress efforts.
