SmartLynx Airlines Marks a Decade of Digital Innovation in the Cockpit
According to SmartLynx airlines, the company is celebrating a significant achievement: a decade of operating with a completely paperless cockpit. Since the rollout of its Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) initiative in 2015,the airline has not only upgraded its cockpit procedures but also made substantial strides in reducing its ecological impact, saving over 30 million sheets of paper—equivalent to preserving more than 3,500 trees.
The journey towards a paperless cockpit began with an aspiring goal: to simplify documentation processes and align SmartLynx with international aviation standards. Previously, pilots had to manage over twelve hefty volumes of Jeppesen charts that required weekly manual updates and physical delivery to each aircraft. This method was not only expensive but also elaborate and resource-heavy.
As adopting this innovative approach in 2015,every pilot at SmartLynx has been provided with personal iPads functioning as their EFBs. These devices come loaded with various tools such as performance calculators, briefing aids, digital manuals, and safety reporting features—all designed to eliminate physical paperwork while allowing for quick updates in real-time.
“Our initial goal was straightforward: lessen workload while enhancing safety and minimizing our environmental footprint,” shares Edvinas Demenius,CEO of SmartLynx Airlines. “Over these ten years, we’ve focused on continuous improvement; making our cockpit operations smarter and more efficient has been paramount for us.”
The benefits extend beyond just being eco-friendly; operationally speaking, the shift has led to fewer discrepancies during post-flight data processing. The digital framework allows for smooth updates and secure data flow across various departments while substantially cutting down administrative tasks.
Looking ahead, SmartLynx aims to broaden its digital horizons even further—recently transitioning to FLIGHTKEYS 5D flight planning software—and is keen on exploring AI-enhanced features along with predictive analytics for smarter integration throughout flight operations.
