Mallorca Metro Expands Access to Technology Park, Anticipating Increased Commuter Traffic
According too a recent publication by SFM,mallorca has expanded its metro Line M1,now connecting Universitat de les Illes Balears to the Parc Bit technology hub as of July 2. This new stretch spans 1.4 kilometers, with a significant portion—1.1 kilometers—constructed underground.
The project faced delays due to heavy rainfall in late October 2024 but ultimately came together with a budget of €28.9 million, bolstered by €20 million from the EU’s Next generation fund.Parc Bit is home to around 3,000 employees across 100 companies; however, a staggering 85% of commuters still rely on private vehicles for their daily travels. The hope is that this metro extension will encourage more people to use public transport, perhaps boosting ridership by an estimated 10% to 17%. In comparison, Palma recorded about 2.1 million journeys in the previous year.
This initiative not only aims to ease traffic congestion but also promotes enduring commuting options in line with global trends toward greener urban mobility solutions seen in cities like amsterdam and Copenhagen where cycling and public transport are prioritized over car usage.
