Germany Alleges China Engaged in Laser Targeting of Aircraft During EU Operations in the Red Sea

According to a recent report from Reuters, Germany has called in the Chinese ambassador following an alarming incident where a German aircraft, part of an EU mission in the Red Sea, was targeted by a laser from a chinese warship. This escalation highlights growing worries within the EU regarding China’s expanding influence over vital technologies and security frameworks across Europe.

Germany’s foreign ministry expressed strong disapproval on social media, stating that endangering German personnel and disrupting their operations is entirely unacceptable. Meanwhile, there has been no immediate reaction from China’s foreign ministry or its embassy in Berlin regarding this situation.

The aircraft involved was part of the ASPIDES mission aimed at safeguarding international maritime routes in the Red Sea. As October, it has been providing reconnaissance support through what is known as a Multi-Sensor Platform (MSP), frequently enough referred to as a “flying eye.” According to Germany’s defense ministry spokesperson, during a routine flight earlier this month, the Chinese warship unexpectedly directed its laser at the aircraft without any prior warning or justification. Fortunately, after assessing potential risks to safety and equipment integrity due to this aggressive act, the mission was aborted safely with the aircraft landing back at its base in Djibouti.

Interestingly enough, while incidents involving lasers have previously occurred between China and U.S. military assets—such as when a Chinese vessel allegedly targeted an American patrol plane near Guam—this type of confrontation with European NATO members is relatively rare.

Despite these tensions escalating between Germany and China over military conduct in international waters, it’s essential for nations involved to engage diplomatically rather than resorting solely to confrontational tactics. The ongoing deployment of MSP underlines how crucial data collection is for enhancing situational awareness among allied partners operating within sensitive regions like these.
