Moskva Monorail Transformed into a Scenic Elevated Park Experience
According to a recent report from Moskva Metro, the city’s 4.7 km straddle monorail line has officially ceased operations. This route, known as Line 13, will be transformed into an elevated linear park situated six meters above ground level. The operator noted that the monorail never truly fulfilled its role as an effective transportation option for commuters.Routine inspections uncovered important repair needs, and with option travel methods available along the same corridor, it was decided to shut down services. The final rides took place on June 27.Plans are in motion to demolish approximately 800 meters of track from Vystavochny Tsentr to the depot while converting the remaining sections into a vibrant high-level park. This new space is anticipated to welcome around 20,000 visitors daily—ten times more than what the monorail ever accommodated.
Originally part of Moscow’s bid for World Expo 2010, this line opened in November 2004 primarily as a tourist attraction and began regular service in 2008. Designed with a capacity of handling up to 7,500 passengers per hour in each direction, it faced challenges over time; by 2016 it reverted back to operating solely for tourists every half hour due to difficulties obtaining spare parts from Swiss manufacturer Intamin. At closure, onyl two trainsets remained functional.
This shift towards creating green spaces reflects a growing trend worldwide where cities are prioritizing parks and recreational areas over conventional transport systems that may not meet current urban needs effectively.
