Cellus, a cargo ship, ran aground at the entrance to a harbour.
It had sailed from Brünsbuttel in Germany and came to a halt after it came to the Port of Sunderland. It blocked the entrance to the facility and also the River Wear on Friday.
Tugs from Tees and Tyne were sent to refloat the ship, which was carrying paper products.
It later berthed at Greenwell’s Quay in the port.
Fortunately, there were no reports of pollution and no injuries to the crew members or port officials.
The Port of Sunderland is a major facility on the North Sea, positioned on the River Wear.
It provides deep-water access and can handle large vessels carrying diverse cargo such as bulk, forest products, project cargo, steel, etc.
It also offers round-the-clock services, including warehousing, heavy-lift cranes, and Enterprise Zone sites for businesses in the energy sector, manufacturing and shipping.
Cellus is sailing under the German flag.
