The Indian Navy’s sail training ship INS Sudarshini set sail on 20 January 2026 for the Lokayan 26, a 10-month transoceanic expedition that will cover over 22,000 nautical miles and visit 18 ports in 13 countries, the Ministry of Defence said.

A key part of the voyage will be INS Sudarshini’s participation in international tall-ship events, including Escale à Sète in France and SAIL 250 in New York, USA, where the ship will showcase India’s maritime heritage.

More than 200 trainees from the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard will take part in intensive sail training during the expedition.

The Ministry of Defence reported that this will give them hands-on experience in long-range ocean navigation and traditional seamanship, and help them understand life aboard a tall ship.
