Shell reports 1.1 million tons of LNG in bunker deliveries in 2024

Shell Plc said that it delivered record volumes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to power ships in 2024.

As stated, the company’s deliveries reached 1.1 million tons of LNG the last year. According to Bloomberg, Tom Summers, Senior Vice President, Shell LNG Marketing & Trading, highlighted in a statement that the demand for LNG-fueled vessels is picking up pace as the fuel helps ship owners to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Shell in its LNG Outlook for 2025, found that global demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) is forecast to rise by around 60% by 2040. This surge is largely driven by economic growth in Asia, emissions reductions in heavy industry and transport as well as the impact of artificial intelligence.

Moreover, the report highlighted that Europe is expected to increase imports of LNG in 2025 to refill its gas storage.

According to Shell, LNG is becoming a cost-effective fuel for shipping and road transport that can bring down emissions as longer term, existing gas infrastructure could be used to import bio-LNG or synthetic LNG and also repurposed for the import of green hydrogen.

In addition, SEA-LNG has reported that active LNG-fueled vessels now account for more than 2% of the global shipping fleet with the total number of LNG-powered vessels in operation by the end of 2028 projected to be 1,154.
