Three vessels operating in South Pacific switch to biofuels
Swire Shipping has announced that three of its vessels operating in the South Pacific, Apia Chief, Tonga Chief, and Kokopo Chief, have transitioned to using B24 and B30 second-generation biofuel blends.
The vessels, part of the Pacific Weekly Express and East Timor services, will initially bunker B24 biofuel in Singapore in Q2 2025 and later shift to B30. The initiative is a collaborative effort between Swire Shipping, its sister company Argent Energy, and biofuel supplier BP.
As explained, the move reflects a shared commitment within the Swire Group to develop sustainable energy solutions. Argent Energy, a producer of waste-derived biofuels, sees this programme as a testament to the power of international partnerships in driving decarbonisation.
This successful biofuel programme highlights what can be achieved through strong international partnerships, all united by the common goal of decarbonisation.

The company estimates that the environmental benefits in the first year of the programme will be equivalent to taking 2,700 cars off the road.
