Louis E. Sola departs FMC chairmanship after transformative tenure

Louis E. Sola concluded his service today as Chairman of the US Federal Maritime Commission (FMC), through an official statement.

Appointed to the Commission in 2018 by President Donald J. Trump and unanimously confirmed by the Senate, Sola served with a mission to strengthen America’s maritime infrastructure, shield the supply chain from foreign influence, and ensure greater transparency and accountability across global shipping networks.

His appointment as FMC Chairman came on January 20, 2025, shortly after President Trump’s second inauguration.

Over the course of his term, Sola led numerous high-impact initiatives, including Fact Finding 30, which examined measures for the cruise industry to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19.

Sola was also a vocal advocate for US-produced liquefied natural gas as a maritime fuel and led an investigation into the use of flags of convenience, which resulted in calls for the deflagging of more than 140 vessels linked to sanctioned entities.

He provided testimony before both chambers and worked with the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation and the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure to advance maritime policies aligned with US strategic interests.

His leadership earned him recognition from Miami-Dade County and the title of Seatrade Cruise Man of the Year, underscoring his influence on the cruise and broader maritime sectors.

Sola expressed gratitude to President Trump, the Administration, his colleagues at the FMC, and his family, noting that his accomplishments were made possible by a shared commitment to strengthening America’s maritime future.
